This year, Judith and Garry Kahn will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Jerusalem, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. This marvelous occasion is a fitting testament to their commitment to a Jewish life. "We didn't come from wealthy families, but our parents were dedicated to giving, whether it was time, services or financial," says Garry. "It's not a choice to give, it's a mitzvah and a commandment," adds Judith.
Here is but a glimpse of some of the ways that Judith and Garry have enriched our community. Judith served as the director of Camp Solomon Schechter and the Oregon Chapter of the American Jewish Committee. She is a past board member at Neveh Shalom, and a current board member of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. Together, Judith and Garry were co-chairs for the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU, raising funds to match the initial generous gift from the Schnitzers.
Garry has served on the boards of Camp Solomon Schechter, Neveh Shalom and Jewish Family & Child Service. Garry gives generously in his legal community where he is a past president of the Oregon State Bar, the Western Trial Lawyer Association and Oregon Trial Lawyer Association. Garry takes time out of his busy schedule as a private practice lawyer to contribute to the Senior Law Project, which provides free legal aid to elders.
With their donor advised fund at the OJCF, the Garry and Judith Kahn Family Fund, the Kahns have directed grants to the institutions they cherish such as Camp Solomon Schechter, Neveh Shalom, Oregon Area Jewish Committee, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, and many more. "We are proud of all our children's accomplishments. Robert, a former Rabbi in Minneapolis, now lives with his family in Jerusalem where he and his wife work at Young Judea. David, a former journalist and lawyer, works in professional sports. Sarah and her family live in New York, and Steven and his family live in Portland and are active in the local Jewish community," explain the Kahns. As they toast their 50th anniversary, we can only wonder what else they will find worthy of their heartfelt tzedakah in the years ahead.
